Mkoba Teachers College, established in 1976 and officially opened in 1978, is a premier government teacher training institution in Zimbabwe. It specializes in training educators in Early Childhood Development, Primary School, and Secondary Science, with a Secondary STEM program launched in 2018. Notably, it was the first primary teachers' college to gain Associate College status from the University of Rhodesia, marking a significant milestone in teacher education in Zimbabwe.
In the early 1970s, policy shifts prioritized producing highly qualified African teachers, driving the college's strategic development. Classes began in April 1976 with 84 students and 30 lecturers. The merger with Midlands Zintec College in 1983 significantly increased enrollment, which grew from 84 students in 1976 to over 1,700 by 1986, highlighting the college's expanding influence.
Between 1976 and 1987, the college transitioned from 3‑year to 4‑year programs and shifted from awarding Certificates in Education to 3‑year Diploma programs, in line with national education reforms. The training combines classroom instruction, practical teaching experience, and professional development.
